Prosecutor General (PG), Hussain Shameem, has said that vigilante justice needs to be put to a stop immediately.
Speaking at the Human Rights and Gender Committee at Parliament on Wednesday, PG Shameem said vigilante justice has become a concerning issue in the society. He added that it could spiral if not stopped immediately.
"If we do not put a stop to vigilante justice, it will become a huge issue in the future. This is not a matter that can be taken lightly; the laws and regulations should not allow this at any cost", PG Shameem said.
He added that vigilante justice has become prevalent due to delays in the legal system, and that no one should take justice into their own hands.
"I understand people are frustrated because there are delays in the justice system. We need to find solutions for this", he added.
Vigilante justice has become common in child abuse and burglary cases across Maldives.
