Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, has expressed concern over Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) being contracted for majority of the government's projects.
Nasheed said this has led to some private companies going bankrupt.
Nasheed made the remarks in response to Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam's answers to questions from MP's during the parliament session on Wednesday.
Minister Aslam said the projects are delayed due to the ongoing number of projects MTCC is currently contracted with. He noted that private companies cannot match MTCC's capacity for the projects.
Nasheed responded that during his tenure in 2010, a number of private companies carried out such projects, including four dredging companies.
He added that the companies have since gone bankrupt due to the administration contracting MTCC for all such projects.
