Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, has expressed support for MP Qasim Ibrahim's motion to retain MP numbers at 87.

Qasim said that the number of parliament members have been increasing with every term since 2008, and that parliament should keep the number of constituencies at 87, with a single member for each constituency respectively.

The 2009 parliament consisted of 77 members while the number increased to 85 in 2014. The current parliament has 87 members.

Qasim submitted a motion to amend the constitution to retain parliament members at 87.

Speaker Nasheed tweeted in support of Qasim's motion, calling it an important amendment.
