Addu-Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam has stated that the referendum on a Parliamentary System as submitted by Party President and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, would have failed with a landslide defeat.
Speaking to ONE Online on the sidelines of the MDP National Congress that took place yesterday at the social center, MP Rozaina noted that she does not believe the statement of Speaker Nasheed who had said that not holding the referendum would cost the party votes of 47,000 members. She instead stressed that the votes would have been lost if they did hold the referendum.
She further added that it remains highly unlikely that over 90% of the participants at the congress supported the motion to hold a referendum. Hence she noted that withdrawing the motion as per what the participants wanted was a good move by Speaker Nasheed. She also noted his decision to work together to win the 2023 elections was the best one.
Nasheed announced his decision to withdraw the resolution after private discussions with President Solih and MDP's Chairperson and Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail.
He had not provided any further details before withdrawing the motion.
