Former president and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, has decided to withdraw his resolution for a referendum to decide the system of governance in the Maldives.

Nasheed announced his decision to withdraw the resolution after private discussions with President Solih and MDP's Chairperson and Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail.

MDP's Congress, which began on Friday, saw a lot of tension between the party leaders as multiple members including President Solih expressed support for the Presidential system.

Nasheed said earlier in the Congress sessions that MDP would lose 47,000 votes if a referendum is not held to decide a system of governance for the Maldives. President Solih in response stated that he does not believe MDP will lose out on votes.

The MDP Congress was held with 1,200 congressmen in attendance over these 3 days.
