Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that environmental protection can only be established through ensuring profit for its businesses.

President Nasheed said this while speaking today at an inaugural event of Handy Water’s “Go Green” initiative at Kaaf Maafushi.

He said that developmental efforts should be directed in a way that benefits the environment. The former President said that these efforts should be taken in a way that is sustainable.

He noted that when developmental efforts move forward without taking the natural course of action into account, the negative consequences land on every citizen individually.

President Nasheed said that it is apparent that these consequences directly impact income, jobs and local families.

He further noted that the tourism in Maafushi will not move forward without resolving the issue of waste disposal on the island.
