Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has begun working on a petition to get MDP parliamentary group member's signatures to oust Speaker Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva.

One MDP member who signed the petition to oust Nasheed and Eva told 'One' that the petition has been signed by members of President Solih's faction in MDP.

He added that more members will sign the petition which will be submitted to the Parliament once the latter resumes.

Majilis Speaker can be removed with 43 out of 87 member votes in Majilis.

MDP members have expressed discontent at Nasheed defending his brother Nazim Sattar who was recently arrested for allegedly partaking in sexual acts with a Bangladeshi man. Deputy Speaker Eva is said to be supportive of Nasheed's comments.

The petition which has been published on change.org states that Nasheed is challenging the tenets of Islam and creating a nuisance for the public.

Speaker Nasheed has called his brother's arrest politically motivated to appease hardline extremists in the coalition. He also accused President Solih of engaging in sexual acts with a young girl, threatening to leak his photos.

Nasheed's actions have sparked criticism from MDP members who have been calling for his removal from Speaker post in Parliament.
