Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as Sri Lanka's president on Thursday among political unrest and economic crisis.

Ranil took oath of office with Sri Lanka's police chief, with top military brass standing behind him.

The newly sworn-in president is expected to form his Cabinet which will feature several opposition lawmakers according to sources.

Sri Lanka has been facing its worst economic crisis with acute food, fuel, and medicine shortages leading to public outcry and protests resulting in the resignation of the former prime minister, several cabinet ministers, and ultimately president Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The country has been declared bankrupt as foreign reserves ran out. Sri Lanka is currently in bail-out talks with International Monetary Fund (IMF).
