President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has ratified the first amendment to the Fisheries Act of the Maldives on Wednesday.
The amendment was passed by the Parliament in the 22nd sitting of its second session on Thursday, 30 June 2022.
The new amendment rephrases Section 56 of the Fisheries Act to remove Maldives Transport Authority from the list of agencies mentioned in the section pursuant to the repealing of the Maldives Transport Authority Act on December 13, 2021.
The new amendment now mandates the relevant ministry, in consultation with the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Coastguard, the Maldives Police Service (MPS), the Maldives Customs Service, and other relevant agencies, to develop and implement a monitoring, control, and surveillance system to monitor and control fishing according to this law.
Following the ratification, the amended Fisheries Act has been gazetted and is in effect.
