A man has been sentenced to prison for trying to sneak into Maafushi prison, while another man has been fined MVR 53,600.

The man sentenced to prison is R. Madduvari Ismail Hammad. Ibrahim Jazlan from N. Manadhoo was fined over the incident.

The men were charged with trying to sneak into Maafushi prison on 22 September 2019 at 0220hrs on a dinghy from the southeast side of the prison.

Criminal Court judge Ali Adam sentenced the men on 6 July after reviewing the evidence presented by Prosecutor General's Office, which included witness statements from Corrections officers.

As per witness statements, Hammad was carrying a backpack which contained mobile phones, chargers, knives and a saw, which the men were trying to sneak into prison.

As such, Hammad has been sentenced to prison for 24 days and Jazlan has been fined MVR 53,600 to be paid within 12 months.
