Maldives National Party (MNP)'s president and Thimarafushi constituency MP, Abdulla Riyaz, has said political parties can raise funds to sustain themselves, and that spending on political parties from government budget is a waste of resources.

Elections Commission (EC) president, Fuad Thaufeeq told 'One' on Monday that all political parties agree that the government's budget allocation for political parties are unfair. He added that EC has suggested the government allocate budget to parties based on percentage of vote.

In response to EC president, MP Riyaz took to Twitter saying the government needs to cut down on wasting state resources by funding political parties.

MNP submitted a bill to the parliament to revise state budget allocation for political parties on 13 June. The bill was submitted by MNP's Vice President and Vilimale constituency MP, Ali Usham.
