Former President, Mohamed Nasheed, has said that independent candidates running for the upcoming Parliament will not be able to achieve anything.

President Nasheed said this while speaking at campaign event of Parliamentary hopeful for with MDP ticket for Gaaf Dhaal Gadhoo constituency, Ahmed Zahir. He said that a candidate sometimes run in the election without the backing of a large family offered by a political party. President Nasheed said that in these situations, these candidates campaign and claim that they will fulfil pledges made before the people.

He indicated to the Gaddhoo constituency and said that an independent candidate will not be able to achieve anything. President Nasheed said that there are many popular members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), who will be with Ahmed Zahir at Parliament, should he be elected.

The former President noted that Parliament is a place where things are achieved through popular vote and as such, a candidate without backing of members who do not belong to a political party will not serve to benefit the people. He said that the people of Gaddhoo and Vaadhoo have seen this scenario clearly play out.

President Nasheed said that the democratic system has been designed in a way that a group of people within constituencies, with similar ways of thinking are able to unite and direct efforts efforts towards progress.
