Former President, Mohamed Nasheed, has said that a method needs to be sought to ensure that Sri Lanka and Maldives are both assured parts of the ocean surrounding the two nations.
President Nasheed said this while speaking at an event marking Sri Lanka's Independence Day, held at the embassy in Maldives last night. He said that the oath should be paved for Sri Lankan fisherman should be allowed to conduct businesses in Maldives as well as for Maldivian fishermen to conduct businesses in Sri Lanka.
The former President said that both countries stand to benefit from such an arrangement between Sri Lanka and Maldives. He noted that there are many Sri lankan investors and construction companies currently in Maldives.
Additionally, President Nasheed noted that Sri Lanka has always aided in Maldivian efforts at establishing democracy as well as assisted in facing challenges and offered protection. As such, President Nasheed conveyed his gratitude to Sri Lanka.
