Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the Maldivian public progress through carrying out particular actions at specific times.

President Nasheed said this while speaking at the 10 year anniversary event of the University of Milano-Bicocca Maldives Outpost at Faafu Atoll Magoodhoo today. While the former President was the chief guest at the event today, the outpost was first established in the year 2009 during his administration.

He said that mostly what the people seek to find, is something that can increase the holdings of their pockets from day to day, as a measure of progress.

President Nasheed added that the people also seek to live a life where their children can be looked after without certain concerns. He reiterated that these are in areas such as housing, employment opportunities as well as a stable salary, accessibility and available medical care to treat their children.

The former President said that progress cannot be attained by going against the natural order of things. He reiterated that, installing barriers against waves on reefs of islands and calling it progress is simply a minor improvement.

President Nasheed said that interfering with nature results in many consequences that may not necessarily be tangible or visible. He added that the effects of this interference will be seen through everyday lives. President Nasheed said that the Maldivian Democratic Party, (MDP) is working tirelessly to ensure that no action goes against the decrees of nature.

He noted that the natural beauty and resources of the islands are a legacy of our ancestors and added that this legacy should be passed down for generations to come. President Nasheed also said that splitting up this legacy like one does for the inheritance of real estate, and passing the pieces down to the next generation is not our prerogative.  

Additionally, President Nasheed also said that what is passed down to our children should always be more than what we ourselves received.

The former President said that his meeting with the people of Magoodhoo is taking place after a long time, and said that he has been to several places during this time. He noted these places and said that he had been in Maafushi Prison, Himmafushi Prison as well as exiled in England through the years. President Nasheed said that had always remembered the citizens of Faafu Atoll Magoodhoo throughout all those years, in all those places.
