Former President Mohamed Nasheed has raised the question of what an alternative to Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Agenda ‘19 for Parliamentary election would be, to bring about judicial reform.

President Nasheed raised this question in response to comments made by former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed stating that Agenda ‘19 will ruin the Maldivian judiciary.

The former Vice President and Parliamentary hopeful for Vilimale’ constituency Dr. Jameel had spoken on “Avas Hukuru” program regarding the matter. He had said that judicial reform is imperative and that issues in the judiciary are currently due to influence exerted over Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the judges.

Dr. Jameel had said that while this is the current condition of the judiciary, MDP’s Agenda ‘19 will further worsen the judicial system. He had added that Agenda ‘19 directs powers over to the registrar and that the registrar is determined by Parliament.

Parliamentary hopeful for Mid-Machchangoalhi constituency President Nasheed has since responded to comments by Dr. Jameel. President Nasheed has said today, that any who say that Agenda ‘19 will worsen the judiciary are welcome to propose a better alternative solution.

He has previously declared that MDP’s Agenda ‘19 consists of 19 different sections of laws.  President Nasheed had also reiterated that agenda has been composed with the past 12 years of experience in mind. The former President has given his confidence that Agenda ‘19 will be made a reality before the people of the nation.
