President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that Sri lanka has offered the most assistance in the efforts by Maldives to achieve a  proper political Independence.

The President said this during an address given to Maldivian nationals residing in Sri lanka. The President said that Sri lanka has built political ties with Maldives from the time Maldives achieved its independence. President Solih reiterated that an embassy of Maldives had been established since that time in Sri lanka.

The President noted that that was the first ever embassy representing Maldives that had been established in a foreign country. He noted that this was 113 years ago in the year 1906.

President Solih noted that the ties between the two nations had been extremely close even at this time. He highlighted Sri lanka’s assistance in establishing a modern form of English medium education in Maldives. The President said that Sri lanka had also aided Maldives in the areas of healthcare as well as economic and social progress.
