Former President Mohamed Nasheed said that there will be changes brought about to the operational regulations within Parliament with the election of the new members of Parliament.
President Nasheed spoke at a campaign event of Parliamentary hopeful with MDP ticket, Ahmed Saleem. He said that the 19th Parliamentary body of Maldives will not consist of members that exhibit no shame and walk around talking of large bags of money.
The former President said that God-willing, the new Parliamentary body would be imbued with integrity. He also reiterated that there will be severe reform of operational regulations at Parliament under the legislative agenda of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Nasheed said that financial statements of MPs will be declared and that God-willing, there will be no dishonest or corrupt MPs at the new Parliament.
He said that the purpose of attending Parliamentary sessions is to get a job done and that the job entails handing the country back to its people. Nasheed reiterated that the job also consists of decentralization efforts of Maldivian islands as well as providing the wealth and income from islands to its people.
The former President said that everything that is found on the islands belong to its citizens. He reiterated that the development of an island is resultant of its people’s hard work. Nasheed also said that the progress is counted on local councils taking full charge and releasing tenders of development projects on islands. He said that the tender becomes attainable following a successful auction that builds roads, establishes water and sewage systems, buildings and schools.
Nasheed said that this nation will ultimately reach a change after income is earned through such work, and the workers themselves become children of the local islands.
