While only men won at the awards ceremony “Gender Balance Index 2018” held at the United Arab Emirates this past Sunday, the country faces criticism on the matter.
The government authorities of Dubai had taken to twitter to share photographs of the winners of the awards. Award winners were presented prices by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai.
Government authorities of Dubai reported that the award is in recognition of gender equality between men and women across various businesses.
There were four categories in the awards. These include Best Personality Supporting Gender Balance, Best Federal Authority Supporting Gender Balance, Best Government Entity Supporting Gender Balance and the Best Gender Balance Initiative.
The four awards were won by men. As such, several people have taken to express their frustration and anger at the news on social media.
It must however be noted that Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, had noted one woman’s name at the ceremony. He highlighted his own daughter’s name Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoumm at the ceremony.
A statement released by the government of UAE stated that Sheikh Mohammed recognized the work by his daughter Sheikha Manal at the Gender Balance Council.
