Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the proposal for judicial reform submitted by MDP was unlawful. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had submitted a judicial reform proposal at the Parliamentary Campaign Policy Workshop.
Dr. Jameel said this via a tweet posted yesterday. While he concurred that judicial reform is an important step, he said that the current reform violated Article 141 of the Maldivian Constitution.
The former VP had also said that MDP’s proposal violated the law from various angles. This includes the powers afforded to the Supreme Court by countries such as India or even suo moto actions and constitutional cases.
Dr. Jameel stressed that lawmaking should not target specific individuals and said that goal of such reform should be the betterment of institutions.
MDP had proposed various changes to the Judicial administration as well as the Judicial Service Commission. A proposal was also submitted to reform court systems established within the islands in various atolls.
