An amendment has been presented at the parliament to ban former Presidents of the country from seeking a parliamentarian seat.

The Media and Communications Director of the Parliament, Hassan Ziyau confirmed to One Online that the amendment has been presented to the floor.

The amendment was presented by the MP for Dhihdhoo constituency, Abdul Latheef Mohamed of the Jumhoory Party (JP).

Talking to One Online, the Secretary General of the Parliament, Fathimath Niusha, said that the bill was previously presented as an amendment to the law but was rejected as it did not fit the regulations.

She said that the new bill is an amendment to the Constitution.

Niusha said that no further information is available at this time as the bill is yet to make it to the parliament floor.

Former President, Mohamed Nasheed, is running for the Mid-Mahchangolhi constituency on the MDP ticket at the Parliamentary Election in April.
