A request to temporarily transfer former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to house arrest has been filed at Civil Court. The request was made after Adeeb was transferred back to prison after being taken to the hospital.

Speaking to the press in front of Police headquarters, Adeeb’s wife Mariyam Nashwa said that there is no government involvement in the decision to take Adeeb back to prison.

Nashwa said however that there are several grievances against Minister for Home Affairs Imran Abdulla regarding the matter. She noted that the transfer was being carried out under direct orders from the Minister. She also said that Adeeb was taken back to prison this time in an unusually harsh manner.

While Adeeb was transferred back to prison today, Nashwa reported that the family was told yesterday that Adeeb would be discharged. She said that while doctors were inquired regarding the discharge, she was told by doctors that there was no other alternative.

Nashwa noted that Adeeb had a high fever even at that time and that there was no change in his pain. She said that it was due to this that a request was put forth to transfer Adeeb’s care to another hospital under another doctor. She noted however that the request was not given any attention.

Nashwa said that the doctor’s words imply that there is severe interference into Adeeb’s healthcare coming from higher up.

While Adeeb was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for treatment on 5 January, he was transferred back to Maafushi prison today.

Maldives Correctional Services had said that Adeeb was transferred back to prison after being discharged from the hospital.
