Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid has announced that the Maldives has decided to re-established the diplomatic relations with Qatar.
The Maldives cut ties with Qatar during Presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in June 2017 after Saudi Arabia launched its embargo against Qatar amid allegations of aiding terrorism. The government at the time insisted that there was no outside influence to the decision.
Taking to Twitter, Minister Shahid said that the Maldives welcomes the positive developments following the annual summit of Gulf Cooperation Council.
“I have had fruitful discussions with the Qatari authorities and am pleased to announce Government of Maldives decision to reinstate full diplomatic relations with Qatar.” Minister Shahid said in his tweet today.
Diplomatic ties between Maldives and Qatar were established on 26 May 1984.
