Spokesperson of the Maldives Police Service, Chief Inspector Izmia Zahir, has said that that the number of crimes reported in 2018 was lower than the number of crimes reported in the previous year.
She made the remarks at the press conference today to share the crime statistics with the press.
The Police Spokesperson said that aside from drug crimes, all other crimes went down in 2018 compared to the previous year of 2017. The highest reported crimes in the past were drug crimes and theft followed by traffic incidents.
The number of cases reported from the atolls have gone up, crimes reported from nine atolls went down in the past year and the number of crimes reported from one atoll had remained the same as the previous year.
A total of 3,270 cases of theft were reported in last year, 3,503 cases in 2017 while 2,230 drug related cases were filed in 2018 compared to 2036 were filed in the previous year. And 2,007 traffic cases were reported in 2018 while 2,100 traffic case were reported in 2017.
Chief Inspector Izmia said that this is an year of reform for the Police.
