The sentencing hearing has been set for today in the trial of the former Vice President, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor who is facing seven charges in connection to the corruption at the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. this morning at the Criminal Court.

The state brought up the seven charges against the former Vice President on Wednesday. They are, accessory to corruption, abusing official authority, abusing the authority of office for personal gain and two counts of money laundering.

Criminal Court had decided to hold the sentencing hearing today as the case is considered a quick-resolution case as Adeeb has pleaded guilty to the charges against him. However, that is under the plea agreement he made with the state.

Under the agreement, the former Vice President is going to receive a lesser sentence of 20 years in prison.

While the sentencing hearing is set for today, Adeeb, who was ordered to be kept in jail until his sentencing, is currently at his home.

Maldives Correctional Service said that Adeeb was moved to his home with the permission of the court due to his health condition.
