Former President Mohamed Nasheed said that it will become impossible to reside in Male' if an appropriate solution is not found.
Speaking at an event launching the primaries campaign for Parliamentary hopeful of Henveyru-South Constituency Mr. Andhun Hussain, President Nasheed said that it has now become imperative to find a solution for the residents of Male' to continue to live in Male'.
"There is no way to further reside in Male'. It has become obligatory for us to provide a way for Maldivian citizens- numerous Maldivian citizens-, to reside in Male'. If we do not find a solution for this island, our children and their children's children will not be able to reside here." Nasheed said.
Nasheed reiterated that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is exceedingly familiar with the future vision for Maldives and that finding a solution for the issue of housing in Male' has been a resolute pledge of the party. He further said that the future Parliamentary body of Maldives will be a means to effectuate this pledge.
"God-willing, the 19th body of Parliament of Maldives will be a means to bring that pledge to fruition. 'Veshi Fahi' housing project is one of our (MDP's) visions." Nasheed said. "The area spanning from all across Male', connected to Villingili, Gulheefalhu, Thilafushi and Hulhumale'; encompassing everything from the Giraavaru Sea to Kalhi belongs to the residents of Male'. That is, the area is appropriate for the people living on this island (Male'). God-willing, the 19th body of Parliament of Maldives will be instrumental in acquiring and building that area."
President Nasheed noted that, in a developed nation, five or six people residing in a space of 100 square feet is not even acceptable residence for 'livestock'. He further said that, according to the law, it should be mandatory for the area's council to find housing for the people who are not at the level of a developed country's housing.
