President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's salary has been reduced to MVR 65,000, while Chief Justice and Speaker of Parliament's salary have been reduced to 37,188.
The reductions were made as part of the government's efforts to reduce expenditure in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As per the decision. 20% will be deducted from salaries between MVR 20,000 and MVR 30,000 while 30% will be deducted from salaries between MVR 30,000 and MVR 60,000. For salaries over MVR 60,000 a total of 35% will be deducted.
A President's salary is set at MVR 100,000 hence it falls under the category to reduce 35%. After a deduction of MVR 35,000, his salary now stands at MVR 65,000.
The basic salary for Chief Justice and Speaker of Parliament is set at MVR 53,125. They fall under the category to reduce 30%. After a deduction of MVR 15,938 their salaries now stand at MVR 37,188.
The parliament passed to reduce salaries for the duration of three months starting May, and hence will be effective through June and July.
