Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom

Appeal filed at High Court to free President Yameen under clemency

An appeal has been filed at the Maldives High Court to free the former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom under clemency. The former President was sentenced to five years in prison by the Criminal Court.

The former Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, who is on President Yameen’s legal team confirmed that an appeal has been filed for clemency at the High Court to free the former President.

Dr. Jameel said that such rights to the people in modern judiciary have been provided in the Maldives in the past. And so, they are confident that President Yameen will be shown clemency and freed.

While an appeal has been filed for clemency, it is unclear whether the appeal was to be released to house arrest or to be freed until the High Court makes a decision.

Following the Criminal Court sentence to five years in prison with a five million dollar fine, the decision was appealed at the High Court as well.

The High Court today said that the appeal has been accepted by the court.
