Speaker of the Parliament, the former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has said that a political system that involves many political parties are required to sustain and develop the republic.
In a tweet sent out by earlier this morning, he welcomed the Maldivian people to the Republic Day and said that the most important thing for a republic is to have a governance by its people. Nasheed said that in the long political history of the country, the closest the country has come to a governance by the people was when multiple political parties were involved.
While the Speaker of the Parliament has made this remark, at the Republic Day function last night, the President, Ibrahim Mohamed Soliih also reiterated the cause of the current government should not be forgotten while celebrating its first year of the term.
President Solih also thanked the four leaders of the government coalition, former President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, former President, Mohamed Nasheed, JP Leader, Qasim Ibrahim and Sheikh Imran Abdulla, the current Home Minister, who consults the president.
