Maldivian Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid has signed the agreement to become a member of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
IORA is an organization of nations connected by the Indian Ocean. The organization founded in 1997 was first proposed by the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, on a visit to India.
Maldives signed to be part of the organization today at the ongoing IORA Summit in Dubai. Minister Shahid left for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) yesterday to be part of the summit.
In a tweet sent out by Minister Shahid after signing the declaration, he said that it is a distinct honor to sign the Instrument of Acceptance to formalize Maldivian membership in the IORA and pledged to strengthen regional cooperation and collaboration in this great region.
