The Prosecutor General (PG) has submitted to the Criminal Court to prosecute former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb over his attempted escape to India, where he tried to seek political asylum.
In a tweet sent out on Tuesday, the PG office revealed that Adeeb is being charged for obstruction of justice and that the case has been submitted to the Criminal Court for prosecution.
Adeeb is being charged over his attempted escape to India's Tuticorin in a tug boat named "Virgo 9" in which he was disguised as part of the crew. The attempted escape happened on 1st of August, after which he was deported by the Indian authorities, back to the Maldives.
The Supreme Court had later ordered Maldives Correctional Service to keep Adeeb in a remand jail until further notice or until the trial against him concludes, on the suspicion that he may attempt such an escape in the future.
