Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor has been arrested and taken to Dhoonidhoo again.
The former Vice President was brought back to the Maldives in the custody of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on board the Coast Guard vessel “Huravee” around 10:30 p.m. last night before transferring custody and was brought to Male’ City on a vessel of the Maldives Police Service.
Adeeb was brought in front of a judge at the Criminal Court where he was told that the arrested outside international laws and was ordered to be freed.
The police then took him to the Police HQ. Then a police vehicle took off with Adeeb, however, it did not go to his residence for hours. Journalists were following the vehicle but the vehicle took a turn the opposing way on a one-way street which forced the journalists to lose the vehicle. Adeeb’s residence and the Male’ jail was checked if he was taken there. The police vehicle brought Adeeb to his residence about two hours later.
Journalists assumed that Adeeb was freed before he was taken back on the vehicle and the vehicle went straight to the No. 1 Jetty and took him to the detention facility in Dhoonidhoo.
Sources say that Adeeb was freed because he was arrested illegally while he was on the Indian Tugboat so the police got another arrest warrant for leaving the country while his passport was withheld by the state.
Adeeb’s passport was frozen under the orders of the Supreme Court. However, Adeeb left the country on a Tugboat going to India. He was arrested before he could enter India after a member of the crew reported it to the Indian authorities which took the vessel into their custody.
He was kept on the vessel guarded by Indian security until the Maldivian authorities arrived to take custody.
