The Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) has closed an investigation into former Supreme Court judges Azmiralda Zahira and Mahaz Ali Zahir, finding insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against them for alleged abuse of authority.
The two judges were removed from the Supreme Court bench in May last year following allegations that they had improperly used their positions to influence a case involving the arrest of IGMH doctor Ismail Latheef by police.
Former Supreme Court Justice Husnu Suood, who had also been suspended in connection with the matter, resigned.
The Parliament approved the removal of Azmiralda and Mahaz amid concerns raised by international organisations and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The PG Office said today that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had referred the case concerning Azmiralda to the PG Office seeking criminal charges.
However, the PG Office said the investigation found insufficient evidence to support such charges and returned the case to the ACC on 10 September.
