The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will assess damage caused by recent heavy rainfall in southern atolls and coordinate government assistance for affected islands.

Addu City and Fuvahmulah City, along with islands in Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls, experienced flooding over the past four days. Local councils have reported that weather conditions are now improving and essential services have largely resumed.

NDMA said clean-up and damage assessment efforts are under way, while arrangements are being made for families who temporarily relocated to return home.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) is also providing guidance on health precautions and cleaning flood-affected areas through local health centres.

NDMA said assistance will be distributed after assessing the damage. The authority added that preparedness measures had been taken in advance amid forecasts of increased rainfall linked to El Niño.

The most significant reported damage was in Feydhoo, Addu City, where nine homes were affected by flooding. One family was temporarily provided with shelter after floodwater made their home uninhabitable.
