President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Maldives and Malaysia have agreed to work together to develop halal and eco-tourism in the Maldives.

Speaking at a joint press briefing with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the President’s Office on Tuesday, President Dr Muizzu said the Prime Minister’s State Visit had further strengthened relations between the two countries.

He said the two sides had agreed to cooperate through international platforms, including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Commonwealth, on matters of mutual interest.

President Muizzu described tourism as a key area of cooperation and said the Maldives would work with Malaysia to further develop the sector, including halal, cultural and eco-tourism and Muslim-friendly travel.

The President also said discussions were held on strengthening economic ties through trade and investment, including exploring a preferential trade agreement to create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.

He invited the Malaysian Government and businesses to invest in the Maldives, particularly in renewable energy and technology.
