The Government will introduce arrangements to compensate owners when vehicles in Greater Malé reach the age limit for use under the new Road Transport Act, Economic Development, Transport and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed has said.

Speaking at a press conference today, Minister Saeed said the age limit for vehicles in Greater Malé will take effect three years after the new law is implemented.

He said owners will not be required to scrap vehicles that reach the age limit. Instead, the Government will establish a system to purchase the vehicles from their owners at a suitable price.

Minister Saeed said the measure is intended to minimise disruption to the public while ensuring income-generating vehicle operators have suitable alternatives.
