Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, who was previously sentenced to prison in several cases, has been freed.
Speaking to 'One Online', Media Coordinator of Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Naseem said that there was no detention on Adeeb as of now, making him a free man. He added that Adeeb was no longer under their custody.
Adeeb was jailed on multiple counts of corruption and terrorism. However, all of these verdicts have been nullified during various stages of the appeal process.
An 8 year jail term was issued on Adeeb by a lower court on June 23, 2016 for the alleged USD 5 million he received as part of the acquisition fee of Lh. Maabinhuraa, which was part of the MMPRC Corruption Scandal as well.
However, last May the High Court deemed the 8 year jail term void and ordered for a re-trial of the case.
Adeeb was also issued a 10 year jail term for the possession of a pistol in 2016, which was nullified by the Supreme Court last May.
High Court had also ordered a re-trial of the 'Finifenmaa' Launch Explosion last may as well, where he was initially issued a 15 year jail term for terrorism after being the alleged mastermind behind the attack on then President, Abdulla Yameen.
