A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to procure equipment for fitness and recreation centers in 42 islands under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) conducted with Indian grant assistance.
The Youth Ministry stated that the signing ceremony for the agreements was held yesterday afternoon at the Foreign Ministry.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iruthisham Adam, signed the MoU on behalf of the Maldivian government. The High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, G. Balasubramaniam, signed on behalf of the Indian government. Minister of Youth, Abdulla Rafiu, signed on behalf of the implementing government institution.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Iruthisham stated that providing equipment to these centers is an important investment in the health and well-being of the island residents. She also noted that the project will pave the way for promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, and expand access to quality good health.
"It is an advancement towards women's empowerment, equality, and increasing social participation," the Foreign Minister highlighted.
In his speech, Minister Rafiu stated that the fitness and recreation centers will become vital hubs that facilitate healthy living, strengthen social bonds, and work towards community well-being.
"This project will expand opportunities for people of all age groups, especially women and youth, to participate in sports and recreation activities, enhancing the well-being and resilience of the public," Minister Rafiu said.
Speaking at the ceremony, both ministers expressed gratitude for the generous assistance provided by the Government of India, noting that this support will bring significant positive changes to Maldivian communities.
