Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed says the Maldives aims to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with India before the end of the year.

Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office, Saeed said the first round of negotiations has been completed, with discussions covering 12 areas involving 102 representatives, including 65 from the private sector.

He said negotiations are continuing on key areas, including trade in goods and services, technical barriers, and economic cooperation.

Saeed said the agreement is part of the Government's efforts to diversify the Maldivian economy, expand access to new markets and create more export opportunities.

The Maldives is already implementing a free trade agreement with China, which came into effect last year, and has also signed a trade agreement with Türkiye.
