Maldives Duty Free Limited, a subsidiary of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), has begun preparations to establish a world-class duty-free operation at the new terminal of Gan International Airport in Addu City.
MACL said the initiative aims to introduce high-end retail services to southern Maldives, enhance passenger experience, and support tourism and economic growth in the region. The project is also part of broader efforts to diversify the national economy and tourism industry.
According to MACL, the new duty-free operation is expected to attract more tourists to the south and create opportunities for new international routes. It will also generate employment, with staff set to receive training abroad through internationally recognised brands.
The development falls under the “Addu Welcomes the World” initiative, which seeks to strengthen the city’s economic prospects and position southern Maldives as a key destination in the global travel network.
