The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has launched new MVR 20 and MVR 100 banknotes under the Randhihafaheh series.
In a statement, MMA said the new batch was issued to meet growing demand in the economy and to replace damaged notes in circulation. Previously received MVR 100 notes on November 2 and MVR 20 notes on November 15 were withdrawn as part of this process.
The new banknotes are signed by Governor Ahmed Munawar and are dated July 31, 2025 (6 Muharram 1447).
MMA stated that issuing new notes due to stock shortages is a normal part of currency management to ensure smooth cash circulation.
Significant design changes have been made to the new MVR 20 note, including the addition of the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol. The symbol appears on the top left side of the note, along with the denomination displayed on the front and right side.
The new MVR 100 note is similar to the edition issued on July 7, 2024.
MMA confirmed that all existing MVR 20 and MVR 100 notes currently in circulation will remain valid and usable. The authority also assured the public that it will continue to maintain trust in the national currency by ensuring sufficient funds are available.
