The Maldives secured the bronze medal in the men’s netball tournament at the Asia Cup in Hong Kong after defeating Japan.
This is the first time the Maldivian men’s netball team competed as a national team, making the medal a significant achievement. The tournament featured host Hong Kong, Japan, Maldives and Malaysia, and was the first men’s netball tournament of its kind held in the region.
The Maldives opened the tournament with defeats against Malaysia (62–11) and Hong Kong (74–16). However, the team bounced back strongly, recording victories over Japan with scores of 24–18 and 28–21 to claim third place.
Before the tournament, head coach Ema Abdul Sattar said it was difficult to assess the strength of the opposing teams and noted that playing most matches indoors would be a challenge, as the Maldivian team had trained primarily outdoors.
