The Hyundai Golden Futsal Challenge 2026 is set to begin with a major technological milestone, as video support will be introduced for the first time at the highest level of futsal in the Maldives. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance match fairness and decision-making throughout the tournament.
The Golden Futsal Association (GFA)’s President confirmed to One that preparations to implement video support in line with international futsal regulations are well underway. With 119 teams competing and more than 280 matches scheduled, the technology is seen as a major step forward in maintaining the integrity of the competition.
Arrangements have been completed not only for the opening Charity Shield match between Eydhafushi and Kaashidhoo, but also for the technical requirements of video support. Referees have undergone targeted training, and practical sessions have been conducted to ensure they are prepared to work with the new system.
Under FIFA futsal guidelines, video support is used based on coach-initiated review requests, with referees reviewing footage only when a request is made under specific conditions. The GFA has completed the recruitment and training of technical personnel to manage the system across matches.
Although video support has not been widely or officially used in regional futsal tournaments, the GFA has chosen to take on the technical and logistical challenges involved. Additional cameras, dedicated technical teams, and updated match procedures have been introduced to ensure compliance with international standards.
Officials acknowledge that challenges may arise during the initial implementation, but emphasize that video support will benefit referees, players, and teams alike. The introduction of this technology marks an important step in the continued development of futsal in the Maldives, alongside ongoing efforts such as the establishment of a futsal refereeing academy.
As the tournament kicks off tonight, the Golden Futsal Challenge 2026 is set to usher in a new era for Maldivian futsal.
