The Dhivehi Premier League saw an action-packed weekend as Dhiraagu and Maziya Sports and Recreation Club both claimed important victories in their respective matches.
Maziya delivered a dominant performance against defending champions United Victory, winning 4–1 to maintain their perfect start to the season. The team has now won all four of its league matches, sitting comfortably at the top of the table with 12 points.
Maziya opened the scoring early in the match when Sergio Mendi Iglesias found the net with a clever deflection from the edge of the area. In the 11th minute, Captain Samooh Ali (Samutte) created another close opportunity, but United Victory’s defence managed to hold on. United Victory came close to equalising, but Maziya goalkeeper Hussain Shareef made a crucial save against Mustafa Mahmoud Ali El Shazli, while Ahmed Bassam Mohamed Naeem’s rebound was blocked by a defender.
Maziya doubled their lead in the 34th minute through Hamza Mohammed after a smooth exchange with Maddie. However, United Victory pulled one back before half-time, with Mustafa scoring to make it 2–1. In the second half, Maziya continued to control the game and sealed the victory with two late goals. Mendi netted his second of the night in the 86th minute, and Luis Almeida added the final goal to complete a 4–1 win.
In another exciting fixture, Buru Sports Club defeated Green Streets 2–1 at the National Stadium on Saturday evening. Green Streets’ captain Rilwan Waheed was shown two yellow cards in quick succession, resulting in a red card in the 18th minute for dissent. The match was temporarily halted as Rilwan protested the decision and refused to leave the pitch, which shifted momentum in Buru SC’s favour.
Taking advantage of the situation, Buru scored just before half-time when Mohamed Naeem deflected the ball into the net. Despite being a man down, Green Streets displayed resilience in the second half. However, they suffered another setback when their goalkeeper Ahmed Rameez sustained an injury and had to be replaced by Yanal Muniz, who later scored a close-range header in the 74th minute. Abdulla Junaid added a second for Buru, while Green Streets’ Obaida netted a late goal that proved only a consolation.
With these results, Maziya remain top of the Dhivehi Premier League table with 12 points, followed by Audi Sports Club, while New Radiant Sports Club sit third with three wins so far. Buru Sports Club are in fourth place with seven points from four matches. The upcoming fixtures will see Odin face Club Eagles on Saturday evening, while TC Sports Club take on Club Valencia later that night. New Radiant will play Victory Sports Club on Tuesday.
