Maldives secured the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Beach Handball Championship, which is being hosted in Kulhudhuffushi City. The tournament features teams from the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and South Africa.
In the semi-finals, the Maldives lost to Sri Lanka, while Bangladesh were defeated by Pakistan. This set up the third-place play-off between the Maldives and Bangladesh.
Although the Maldives had lost to Bangladesh in the league stage, the team showed renewed determination in the bronze medal match. Bangladesh claimed the first set 25-20, but the Maldives fought back to win the second set 22-12. The game was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout, where the Maldives triumphed 7-4.
The win is an important milestone for Maldivian beach handball, as the team continues its preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The squad has been training under the guidance of Pakistan’s experienced coach Asim Rasheed, with much of the training and tournament activities taking place in Kulhudhuffushi.
