The State Trading Organisation (STO) has announced new initiatives to enhance food security both in the Maldives and abroad.

Speaking at a press conference held at the STO Head Office today, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed said the government is planning to acquire fertile land overseas to produce food products for the Maldivian people.

“STO will ensure food security in the long run by acquiring or leasing fertile land abroad,” Minister Saeed said.

The Minister explained that the initiative is aimed at reducing dependence on foreign currency and securing a steady supply of essential food items. He added that STO will also identify and produce goods that can be manufactured locally from 23 additional varieties.

As part of broader food security measures, the Cabinet has decided that STO will begin importing and selling staple foods, fruits, and vegetables. STO will start by importing 10 types of fruits, 10 types of vegetables, eggs, and potatoes for distribution in the Maldivian market.
