Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that the State Trading Organisation (STO) is carrying out poultry farming projects across the Maldives as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen food security.
Speaking at a press conference held at the STO Head Office today, the Minister said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is committed to introducing poultry farming in different regions of the country. He added that the initiative will focus on providing locally produced chicken and eggs to Maldivian households.
He further noted that, in the long term, STO will explore options to acquire foreign land—through purchase or lease—to ensure sustainable food security for the Maldives.
As part of broader efforts to achieve the government’s food security goals, the Cabinet has also decided to allow STO to begin importing and selling staple food items, fruits, and vegetables. STO plans to start importing 10 types of fruits, 10 types of vegetables, eggs, and potatoes in bulk for distribution in the local market.
