President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the development of a resort in Goidhoo Lagoon will be handed over to a buyer this month, with a memorandum of understanding to be signed before the end of August.
Speaking during his two-day visit to Baa Atoll, the President said he had pledged 12 projects for Goidhoo during his election campaign, some of which have already been completed, while the rest are set to begin soon.
Plans for the island include awarding the development of eco-tourism in Goidhoo to a buyer this year, handing over the port expansion project next month, and commencing coastal protection works next year.
The President also highlighted progress on social infrastructure projects. Fenaka Corporation has been tasked with building a multipurpose school hall, scheduled to start early next year. Efforts are underway to upgrade the island’s power plant, improve cabling, and expand capacity. Recruitment for the health centre is ongoing, with plans to hand over its development to a buyer this year.
Sports and youth facilities are also in the pipeline, with work on the football field due to start within three months and a youth and recreation centre to be developed by a state-owned company later this year.
Addressing land shortage issues, President Dr Muizzu said the government had approved the maximum possible allocation of plots and would consider further approvals if the land use plan is revised.
