President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled plans for a comprehensive infrastructure development programme targeting newly reclaimed areas, to be incorporated into next year’s national budget.

Speaking to residents of B. Eydhafushi during his ongoing tour of inhabited islands in Baa Atoll, the President highlighted the nationwide challenge of providing essential services—such as water, sanitation, and electricity networks—in reclaimed land. He pledged to introduce a dedicated policy framework to ensure these needs are addressed systematically and consistently.

Outlining progress on his election commitments, President Dr Muizzu announced that construction of 1,000 housing units will begin this year, with completion scheduled before the end of his term. He further stated that harbour development works in Eydhafushi will be completed within six months, while construction of a new indoor multi-sport complex will commence this year.

Additional commitments for the island include the introduction of a US Dollar ATM service within the year, upgrades to the water and energy networks over the next two years, and the expansion of land available for housing plots. The President also confirmed that Eydhafushi has been selected for the development of a convention centre, with construction to start next year.

Earlier in the day, President Dr Muizzu inaugurated RTL ferry services in Eydhafushi and witnessed the signing of agreements for a Maldives National University campus and a new building for Baa Atoll Hospital.

Reaffirming his administration’s focus on decentralisation, the President stressed the importance of empowering communities and urged local councils to prioritise public service delivery and developmental goals over political divisions.
