Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has assured they will address long-standing concerns of fishermen operating from Malé North Harbour, following the company’s takeover of the facility from Malé City Council in June.

At a meeting held last night at MPL’s head office, CEO Mohamed Rishwan said a dedicated team had been formed to assess and resolve issues faced by fishermen. He urged cooperation with the MPL team and announced that water and electricity would be installed in Zone A, while operations in the far end of the harbour would be strengthened.

Plans include removing small fishing boats that obstruct access for larger vessels, preventing foreign-run businesses in the harbour, and introducing fuel services in coordination with Fuel Supply Maldives (FSM). Rishwan also said access to the eastern side of the port would be improved.

Assistant General Manager for North Harbour, Ahmed Hamdullah Rasheed, said changes would be made based on fishermen’s input, including banning goods vehicles from Zone F and ensuring only fishing boats can enter the fishing zone. MPL also intends to provide ice supply facilities in future.

Although invitations were sent to 100 fishing boat owners, fewer than half attended the meeting.
