Parliament’s Judiciary Committee has unanimously approved the appointment of former Supreme Court Judge Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed as the new Chief Justice. His nomination was forwarded by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu following a selection process conducted by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Ghani was among three candidates shortlisted for the role, alongside former High Court Chief Justice Shujau Usman and Family Court Judge Abdulla Mohamed. The JSC interviewed all three, with Ghani receiving the highest score.

Faresmathoda MP Ashraf Rasheed, presenting the committee's recommendation, said Ghani was the most qualified candidate in terms of education and experience. His proposal was seconded by Thimarafushi MP Ahmed Riza.

The approval was granted by the committee's ruling PNC members. The Chief Justice post became vacant after the retirement of Ahmed Muthasim Adnan on 21 July. Ghanee’s appointment will now move forward for final confirmation by Parliament.
